Some of our favorite projects are small kitchens, because thoughtful design makes such a dramatic difference. Here's how to get more from a compact footprint.
Go vertical
Take cabinetry to the ceiling. It adds real storage for the things you use less often and draws the eye up, making the room feel taller. Wasted space above standard cabinets is the most common missed opportunity in a small kitchen.
Choose storage that works harder
Deep drawers instead of low cabinets, corner optimizers, pull-out pantries and in-drawer dividers mean everything has a place — so counters stay clear and the kitchen feels bigger.
Lighten and reflect
Light cabinet finishes, a continuous countertop and a glossy or glass backsplash bounce light around and open the space up. Under-cabinet lighting keeps the counters bright and usable.
Pick the right scale
Slim-profile appliances, a single-basin sink and a compact island or peninsula can deliver function without crowding. Good design is about fit, not just size.
