How to Layer Kitchen Lighting Like a Designer

Lighting is one of the most under-planned parts of a kitchen — and one of the most transformative. Designers think in three layers, and the magic happens when you combine them.
Task lighting
Light exactly where you work. Under-cabinet lighting eliminates shadows on the counter, and pendants over the island brighten prep and homework. Get this layer right and the kitchen becomes genuinely easier to use.
Ambient lighting
This is your overall glow — recessed cans or a ceiling fixture that fills the room evenly so it never feels like a cave. On a dimmer, it flexes from bright cooking light to a soft evening setting.
Accent lighting
The finishing touch: a statement pendant over the island, LED strips highlighting a glass cabinet, or a light that draws the eye to a beautiful backsplash. Accent light adds warmth and personality.
The takeaway
Put every layer on a dimmer, and plan the lighting during design — not after the cabinets are in. It's one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost upgrades in any remodel.
